A one-two punch from Dylan Griffin and Junior Camacho propelled the San Diego City College men’s basketball team to its fourth straight win, 89-70, over MiraCosta to remain undefeated in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference on Jan. 16.

The back-to-back PCAC champion Knights (13-5, 6-0 PCAC) defended their home court in a game that saw the freshman Griffin match his season high of 31 points.

Camacho scored 24 points in what he called a “team effort.” The physical game had six lead changes, a double technical foul ejection and three Knights that scored double digits.

“It just came down to us just being together, knowing what’s best and what’s best for our team and just not playing egos or being selfish with the ball,” Camacho said.

The sophomore was aware of City’s undefeated record in conference play, saying it’s all about the work the team puts in nightly and during practice.

“We do look at our record, but it’s also us just developing every day, just to get better on the court,” Camacho said. “I think us just grinding down and in practice are the best ways to win.”

The Spartans (8-10, 2-4 PCAC) were led by Logan Argent, who was 4-of-5 from three-point range, shooting 11-of-18 from the floor and pouring in 30 points and five assists.

MiraCosta’s losing streak increased to two games after the loss at City and a 90-77 loss against Southwestern on Jan. 9.

Against the Spartans, City scored 52 in the second half, outscoring MiraCosta by 16 points.

The game was tied at 64 with eight minutes to go when stout defense from the Knights’ Santana Huff and Larry Lewis III shut down Argent and the Spartans offense, which went cold over a four-minute stretch.

Lewis went 5-of-6 from the free-throw line, contributing 12 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block, stifling the Spartan offense that was only down three points at halftime.

To make matters worse for the visiting team, Elijah Samdahl was hit with back-to-back technical fouls after a hard foul toward the head of Huff.

Well after the play, Samdahl was hit with a second technical foul, and the frustrated Spartan sophomore forward was ejected.

City would press the advantage and seize a 20-point lead down the stretch, ultimately winning by 17 in the first of two matchups between these teams.

The Knights will face MiraCosta again on Feb. 13, where City hasn’t won a game since 2023.
