The San Diego City College men’s basketball team will be heading to the 3C2A state championship quarterfinals after an upset win over No. 4 seed and host Ventura College, 67-59, on March 7.
It was the 16th straight win for the No. 5 Knights.
This is the fifth time City has made the quarterfinals since Mitch Charlens became head coach back in 2004, and the second time in the past three years.
Freshman Dylan Griffin led the team with with 20 points and 13 rebounds, followed by guard Junior Camacho with 18 points and four assists.
The Knights finished with their fourth worst field goal percentage of the season (36.9%), but were still able to limit the Pirates to only one lead change early on.
Five minutes into the game, Camacho made a three-pointer that created City’s largest lead of seven points before Ventura took their first 30-second timeout of the game.
City later led, 33-26, after freshman Luke Hecht scored a three-point shot that finished the first half.
In the second half, after three minutes of both teams being unsuccessful in scoring any points, Griffin secured back-to-back layups, allowing City to lead, 59-53, with two minutes left.
Then, with only 18 seconds remaining, Andrew Azebeokhai Jr and Hecht made the final six points of the game after they were both fouled, leading to City’s Sweet 16 victory.
The Knights will face off against the No. 1 seed from the north, City College of San Francisco, in the quarterfinals on March 13 at 5 p.m. at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia.
